HPP IN THE NEWS - SHM Online Exclusive: Emergency Medicine Companies Venture into Hospital Medicine
Posted September 08, 2011
All signs point toward more and more hospitals hiring companies to handle both emergency care and inpatient care
Story by: Thomas R. Collins
Hollywood, Fla. based Hospital Physician Partners (HPP) was an ED business when opportunity came knocking: Hospital administrators started asking, “Can you provide us with some hospitalists to go with our emergency-room doctors?” Today, HPP is firmly in the HM business—and all signs point toward more hospitals hiring companies to handle both emergency care and inpatient care.
“In many ways, we expanded our efforts into hospitalist medicine as a result of requests from our hospital partners,” says Ed Weinberg, HPP’s chief operating officer. “Their needs were such that they asked us to provide hospital medicine services. So from that, it became clear that it was an area that was really growing. And that is something we are pursuing as vigorously as we are emergency medicine.”
HPP handling both emergency care and hospital medicine can help with the transition of patients from the ED to a hospital bed upstairs, he says. “That’s where our efficiencies are, because we have physicians working who are carrying out the same philosophy,” he says. Out of HPP’s 120 contracts, 15 are in hospital medicine. But the HM contract numbers are growing quickly, Weinberg notes.
EmCare has about 400 emergency-medicine programs and more than 50 HM programs, according to Mark Hamm, CEO of EmCare Inpatient Services. He says that it can be much more cost effective to contract with one company for both hospitalist and ED services, something hospitals find attractive. EmCare service agreements range from completely separate emergency and HM staffs to small, rural hospitals where ED physicians also do rounds. Some hospitals “just don’t have the money for a full-time hospitalist and don’t really need one,” Hamm says.
The patient transitions tend to go more smoothly when both types of care are provided by EmCare, he adds. If they’re not, there can be slowdowns. “Our goal is to quickly and appropriately move patients through the system,” he says. “If we have a hospitalist provider that’s not really on the same page, that can create bottlenecks. But it’s a blip. Our goal is to sit down, even if it’s not an EmCare hospitalist, to sit down with that director and say, ‘Hey look, let’s be the leader here, let’s work together and appropriately expedite these patients.’ We do the same thing on the hospitalist side.”
Inpatient care promises to be a big part of their future business, the executives agreed.
“Hospital medicine,” Weinberg says, “is growing by leaps and bounds.”

HPP Awards Alabama Medical Director For Leadership During Crisis
Posted June 27, 2011
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Alabama Medical Director Recognized For Leadership During Tornado Crisis
Hollywood, Florida, June 27, 2011 – Dr. Doug Alexander, Medical Director for Russellville Hospital in Russellville, Alabama, has been recognized for his service and leadership in the aftermath of the recent tornados which devastated Alabama. Hospital Physician Partners (HPP) has given Dr. Alexander its Partners in Excellence Award for Outstanding Service. HPP, through an affiliate entity, manages the emergency department at Russellville Hospital. The award is given by HPP to clinical providers who demonstrate service above and beyond the call of duty and help deliver world class patient care, customer service and leadership.
The F5 tornado on April 27 devastated the communities of Phil Campbell and Hackleburg, Alabama with 39 victims, many in critical or life threatening condition, arriving at Russellville Hospital’s Emergency Department within a three hour window of the tornado. The emergency department averages 30 patients in a 24 hour period patients per hour. “I’ve never been in battle, but this must be what it’s like,” said Dr. Alexander. “The level of injury and the pace of which people were arriving was unlike anything I’d ever seen. It was the teamwork and rapport our staff has together that helped pull us through. There wasn’t a person in this entire hospital that wasn’t doing something to save a life, make people comfortable or help in some way.”
Hospital CEO, Christine Stewart, who along with many of the 301 person hospital staff was on the front lines that day, says she could not have asked for a more prepared team or better response. “Dr. Alexander and the emergency department team were at the front door of the crisis and they responded superbly. There was no way to predict how everything was going to turn out as victim after victim kept arriving. We’re a small rural hospital, which responded like a major city trauma center. We’re lucky to have this level of talent saving lives here in our community,” said Stewart.
Dr. David Schillinger, HPP President and Chief Medical Officer, presented the award to Dr. Alexander in a recent ceremony at the hospital. “Dr. Alexander and his team rose to the occasion in a time of great crisis. This is proof once again of how important teamwork, training and communication are between departments in a hospital.”

Hospital Physician Partners Hospitalist Program Management Expanding Nationally
Posted December 23, 2010
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, December 23, 2010 – Hospital Physician Partners, one of the nations fastest growing Hospitalist and Emergency Department (ED) management groups, has seen a rapid expansion of its Hospitalist division over the last two quarters of 2010. Since June, the Florida based company has added seven new Hospitalist contracts in Florida, Texas and North Carolina and opened a new Hospitalist division office in Naples, Florida.
Hospital Physician Partners most recent Hospitalist Medicine management program additions include Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center, Daytona Beach, FL; Johnston Medical Center, Smithfield, NC; Southwest General Hospital in San Antonio, TX and The Medical Center of Southwest Texas in Port Arthur, TX. In total, Hospital Physician Partners now manages Hospitalist Medicine programs across the country in eight states including Florida, Texas, Arizona, Kentucky, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and West Virginia.
Hospital Physician Partners contracts with hospitals to provide a comprehensive Hospitalist Medicine management program which includes clinical staffing, process management, training and education and performance improvement. Each program is managed by practicing Hospital Physician Partners’ physicians who in addition to the operational responsibilities also work clinical shifts.
“The need is increasing for a more efficient and patient focused global continuum of care. With this need, the implementation of Hospitalist programs continues to grow,” says Jeffrey Schillinger, CEO of Hospital Physician Partners. Hospital Physician Partners’ Hospitalist providers include Physicians, Physicians Assistants and Nurse Practitioners who provide care for patients while they are in the hospital. All care is coordinated with a patients primary care physician but it is the Hospitalist who treats and ultimately discharges the patient with follow-up to occur with the patients primary care provider.
Schillinger says his company specializes in helping hospital leadership manage challenges hospital-wide versus offering a “silo” approach. “We have an intimate knowledge of both Emergency Medicine and Hospitalist Medicine. Patient care is no longer one-dimensional. We integrate our diverse expertise to help hospitals manage the patient experience from the time of the initial ED visit to admission and/or discharge,” says Schillinger. “The integration of these service lines is a natural progression in improving overall patient care,” added Schillinger.

New Acquisition Expands Hospital Physician Partners Hospitalist-Based Business
Posted August 27, 2010
Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, August 24, 2010 – Hospital Physician Partners, one of the nation’s fastest growing Hospitalist and Emergency Department management groups, has acquired Naples, Florida based Panda/King Group’s (PK) hospital and provider contracts. The move firmly positions Hospital Physician Partners to grow its Hospitalist-based business which has been steadily expanding over the past year with the addition of more than 25 Emergency Medicine and Hospitalist Medicine contracts. “The acquisition of the PK Group contracts is a real value that will have immediate impact on our existing Hospitalist-based business,” says Jeffrey Schillinger, Hospital Physician Partners CEO. “PK’s team consists of seasoned clinicians who deliver quality patient care and also understand the level of partnership and collaboration which is required with hospital leadership in order to effectively integrate ED and Hospitalist programs.”
PK Group has been managing Hospitalist contracts in the Southwest Florida area for over five years. Dr. Sunil Pandya, co-founder and former CEO of the PK Group, sees great things ahead. “We have developed a singularly unique program incorporating best practices from around the country,” says Pandya, “Hospital Physician Partners is now in a strong position to implement all of our solutions a la carte to hospitals currently struggling with their inpatient services.” Pandya will serve as the Chief Medical Officer for Hospital Physician Partners’ Hospitalist division which will be run from PK’s former offices in Naples, Fl.
As a result of the purchase, Hospital Physician Partners clinicians now practice Hospitalist Medicine at NCH Downtown Naples Hospital, NCH North Naples Hospital and Physicians Regional Medical Center – Collier and Pine Ridge locations. Nationally, Hospital Physician Partners manages Hospitalist programs in Arizona, Texas, Florida, North Carolina, West Virginia, Georgia and Kentucky with plans for expansion throughout the rest of the U.S.
“Our experience and knowledge creates a clinically advantageous environment for our clients,” says Schillinger. “We offer an integrated management approach with local, clinically active leadership working alongside our providers and hospital administration to address issues and concerns early before they become problems.” Dr. Pandya notes that the relationship between Hospitalist programs and the Emergency Department is a close one and they depend on one another greatly. That approach is already being exercised as many of Hospital Physician Partners current Hospitalist contracts include management of both Emergency and Hospitalist Medicine programs.
